Rich vs Average People

I spied a provocative article on Yahoo!Finance last week – 21 Ways Rich People Think Differently. Who can resist an article about rich people, with bullet points to boot! Admittedly, I’m not yet wealthy (unless you count the many blessings of good health and a happy family). So when I bristled at a few bullet points, it was time to bring in the big guns.

We spoke with Ed Peterson on the Midday Money Show. He’s a successful business tycoon, a member of my church, and all around great guy. He agreed to add a wealthier perspective to my understanding of how rich people think. You can catch the entire interview through the Blog Talk Radio plugin in the upper, left corner.

My heartburn flared around the following points:

  • Rich people think selfishness is a virtue. Ed said not so much.
  • Average people think you have to choose between being rich and having a good family.
  • Average people think money is the root of all evil. Either I’m not average (I like to think not), or this guy is using those hasty generalizations sixth-grade, social studies warned against.

Of course, there were some very good points. Ed really helped to shine a light on money, kids, education, and risk. Until I can speak for rich people personally, I’m doing all I can to learn from those on the other side.

Check out the article. Let me know what you think.
